On Monday 21st of September, Dr Krystal Lockwood and Dr Pekeri Ruska presented the Annual International Day of Peace, Peace Lecture. This lecture spoke to themes of “Youth Justice Reimagined; First Nations Futures Unbound”.
First Nations young people continue to be incarcerated at disproportionately high rates across Australia. Dr Lockwood poses the question, "Can we call ourselves a just society while so many First Nations children and young people continue to be exposed to the harms of the criminal legal system?" Read the full piece from Dr Lockwood.
Dr Ruska shared, “Jails do not work. They fail to address recidivism. They fail to provide the holistic, wrap-around care that children require, which has been proven to reduce incarceration. So instead, we must turn to community — to the hundreds of First Nations communities across the country that are self-determining change”. Read the full piece from Dr Ruska.
