A new article co-authored by Professor Brendan Hokowhitu explores the growing links between
sport and environmental change, calling for a major rethink of sport’s place in the era of climate crisis.
The piece brings together insights from Professor Hokowhitu, Dr Billy Graeff and Professor Holly Thorpe to examine how sport is both shaped by and contributes to the environmental challenges of the Anthropocene. It highlights the impacts of mega sporting events, the environmental cost of industrial expansion, and the role of colonialism and capitalism in shaping global sport.
Professor Hokowhitu, an expert in Indigenous studies, argues that Indigenous knowledges offer important alternatives to dominant models of sport and sustainability. The article also points to the influence of athlete activism and community-led movements, and stresses the need for more sustainable and socially just approaches to sport in the future.
